‘bringing peace to the mind and joy to the body’

What is Chinese Medicine?

Chinese Medicine, with its origins dating back thousands of years in China, is one of the world’s oldest and most revered healing systems. While interpretations and treatments have evolved, the core principle of viewing the body as a harmonious network of interconnected systems working together remains constant. The philosophy is rooted in the Tao, where opposing and complementary forces, such as Yin and Yang, along with the three vital substances (qi, blood, and body fluids), form the foundation of Chinese Medicine.

In Chinese Medicine, the human being is seen as a microcosm of nature. We are not only connected to nature, heaven, and earth, but we are also an integral part of this natural world. Our vital life force, known as Qi, is constantly influenced by changing environmental factors, like wind, dampness, fire, heat, and cold, as well as our ever-shifting emotional landscape.

The body interacts with its environment through this channel system, extending throughout the body to its extremities. An imbalance in Qi anywhere within this network can lead to illness or disease arising from changes in both external and internal environments.

Restoring balance and preserving health and wellness in Chinese Medicine involves nurturing the whole person and how they relate within the social and natural order. Causative factors of disease encompass elements like constitution, genetics, environment, diet, lifestyle, and emotional health. Identifying the causes of disease leads to formulating a disease pattern, guiding practitioners toward individualised treatment plans to restore homeostasis.

Diagnosis is based on both observable signs and systematic disharmony. Central to this holistic approach is the belief that the outer body reflects the inner body’s health. The Chinese Medicine practitioner assesses these imbalances through questioning, observing the tongue, feeling the pulse and palpating the channels and abdomen.

To regain balance, Chinese Medicine offers a diverse range of treatments, including:

  • Acupuncture
  • Moxibustion (external treatment of burning herbs on acupoints)
  • Cupping
  • Gua Sha (scraping)
  • Massage
  • Herbal remedies
  • Dietary and Lifestyle recommendations

A Chinese Medicine treatment is as dynamic and unique as life itself. No two individuals are the same; thus, no two treatments are identical. Chinese Medicine can offer support and healing to anyone on their personal journey towards health and balance.

Why Chinese Medicine?

  • Chinese Medicine is based on holistic principles, which consider the whole person, not just isolated symptoms or diseases, and aims to restore balance and harmony within the body.
  • Chinese Medicine is not only used for treating diseases but also for prevention and maintaining overall health. It can help strengthen the body’s natural defences.
  • Acupuncture point and Herbal prescriptions are tailored to each patient’s unique constitution, making it a personalised form of treatment.
  • When prescribed and administered correctly, Chinese herbal Medicine is generally considered to have fewer side effects than some pharmaceutical drugs.
